An example better sharpen in Resolve

So here I am coloring the feature Uninvited Guest for Director Brian Ruppert.
The footage is shot in 5D, which is originally 1440*1080 you know.
Now what we are going to do is to sharpen it.
Here is the original picture.
Picture
Question is if we just sharpen all the picture, then comes the result that the red/ green noise will sharpen and pops out.
Picture
So here is the way: we can separate the luminance and chroma into two different layers and just sharpen the luminance node.
Use layer nodes, 1st take out the luminance, 2nd take out the saturation. and sharpen the 2nd one, then use Add mode.

Here is the final result and details.

A film look: AERO short trailer

Just did a short trailer for Arturo Vargas. 2 simple shots shot in Universal studio sound stage.
So the visual reference is from The breaking bad. So this one was shot in 35mm film.

The footage is RED and in RedGamma 3. to imitate a film look first I chose it to RedFilm Log, and applied a LUT provided by Juan Melara, a great colorist. so anyway, the 3D LUT is Kodak 2393 log to HD ConstLmap, this makes me keep all the color and compressed into the one I am doing now. Let's see the different.
Picture
This one is the RedGamma 3 color.  lol oh my god the uploaded picture sucks...
Picture
This one is after applied the LUT, 2393 is a little bit warmer than 2383. the shadow is a little bit green and mid tone a little magenta, that's what we want so we keep it.

And we are moving forward to match the reference. crushes the shadow a little bit, and the second node track the actor's face, make it brighter. That's it, not too many crazy things. :)

Incarnation- a Minority Report look

Found an color work long time ago.
Incarnation by Andrew Messersmith, DP Luca Brinciotte.
The director wants a Sci-Fi look and the reference is Minority Report.
I don't have the breakdowns for this effect so I'll just explain it here. :(
Picture
To analyze the film, the most famous look is based on a desaturate, contrasty blue look. but it's more interesting how they deal with the highlight.
Picture
For the film if you look carefully, most of the scene are so contrasty that the highlight is over exposed. But that's it's unique way, they put glares on top of it.

So what I basically did to color Incarnation is.
Desaturate, adjust contrast, move the mid tone to blue or green, make a layer (forgot which mix option), and key the luminance out, soft it, lay it on top of there other layer.
A unique look is always a colorist's favorite!

Color Breakdown of Milk Money

One scene from Milk Money, Director Nicci Tompson, DP Amanda Loyd
Shoot in Canon 5d mark ii

A test color grading of the summer blockbuster look.

So what I did in each nodes:
1 drop down the expose cause it's too bright in the scope
2 desaturate the background, the blue and green kitchen stuffs.
3 creates a power window that tracks the character's head, invert it and drops the background down.
4 start to make 2 layers for the summer blockbuster look, the first one is just to turn all the image to a blueish look.
5 the second layer to pick up the skin tone and adjust it a little bit warmer.

There are some other nodes for de-noise not listed.

Recently I found a very good film print look LUT, that can makes any footage into a film look, I'll talk about that later. :)
